In order to achieve any style you must, first KNOW YOUR HAIR. (refer to my hub on shampoo and hair texture) Once you are familiar with you hair and you know what works and what does not work; you are well on your way to sucess. After you have selected the proper shampoo, conditioner and styling aids your toolbox is complete and ready to use.
After shampooing your hair with a PH balanced shampoo (refer to the PH scale in my hub on SHAMPOO AND HAIR TEXTURE), condition with a conditioner that is formulated for your type of hair. Rinse the conditioner off with lukewarm to cool water, this allows the conditioner to stick to the cuticle, the cool water helps to keep the cuticle closed. After you have rinsed and towel dried your hair to remove any excess water you are ready for styling. Once the excess water has been removed from the hair a heat protectant should be applied; even if only blow drying.
You may have to shop around to find a heat protectant that works for the texture of your hair. All products are not made for all types of hair ex. If you have straight hair you would not want to purchase a heat protectant that is formulated for curly or wavy hair and vice versa. Once you find the proper heat protectant you can start to dry your hair. You should start drying your hair on the lowest setting to ensure that any excess water is out. increase temperature as the hair dries. If you have ethnic hair I recommend that you apply a small amount of some type of oil to the hair while it is damp then increase temperature. The oil sticks to the cuticle while drying this prevents you from having you to add more oil once the hair is dry.
Once the hair is dry apply a small amount of your heat protectant if you are going to continue styling futher. If you are going to use a curling iron or flat iron the haet protectant is mandatory, Taking small secions will increase the chance that the hair will recive and even amount of heat throughout. I konw you have seen other women or maybe even on your own head, the humps and bumps that should not be there. This comes from to big of a secion being curled at one time. I know that you are thinking that you don't have the time to do each and every individual section. Well if you do it right the first time your hair will eventually get used to the style; that's when you will save on time.
STYLE SAVERS
If you like to wear your style for more than one day you should have the proper tools in you hair care tool box. Satin rollers are a nice tool to use if you wear your hair curled. A satin cap or scarf will also help to keep your hair silky and full of body. These tolls also prevent cotton sheets and pillow cases from pulling the hair out. Pin curls are an "old school " way to keep your curls in place.
If you are rocking the straight look wrapping you hair at night and tying it down, ensures that your hair will be straight and silky in the morning. For those who just refuse to wrap it,tie it down, roll it or pin curl it; a silk pillow case will work just fine.
